Course Objectives

It’s All in Your Mind! Mindful Meditation For Patient Care (4 CE hours)
Upon completion, the professional RN will be able to:
• Define mindfulness-based stress reduction and articulate the importance of mindfulness in healthcare
• Define breathwork meditation and articulate how stress reduction improves patient care and experience
• Specify 3 strategies to incorporate techniques into care plan.
• Specify 3 opportunities or diagnoses where mindfulness and/or meditation could improve quality of care.
• Guide patient in breathing meditation based on scenario
• Evaluate subjective and objective patient response to relaxation techniques
• Conclude findings of evidence-based research articles on mindfulness/mediation

Deactivate Pain, Improve Mobility (5 CE hours)
Upon completion, the professional RN will be able to:
• Describe muscle function’s impact on mobility/stability assessment performed by acute care RN
• Describe difference between passive and dynamic muscle movement and how results/negative outcomes can be avoided
• Identify target muscles to assess and dynamically activate prior to performing mobility assessment
• Specify 2 strategies to incorporate techniques into care plan
• Perform accurate mobility/ROM assessment for successful care plan/placement
• Evaluate patient’s participation ability in mobility assessment and aftercare plan to improve outcomes

Reduce Pain, Apply Pressure (2 CE hours)
Upon completion, the professional RN will be able to:
• Describe 3 key principles of acupressure, including history, mechanism of action, and common techniques.
• Specify 5 opportunities for utilizing acupressure
• Demonstrate proper hand placement and pressure techniques for at least 2 acupressure points known to alleviate pain or discomfort
• Accurately assess and document patients’ pain/nausea levels before and after treatment
• Evaluate patient participation and confidence in performing self-acupressure

Complementing Patient Care with Essential Oils and Reiki! (4 CE hours)
Upon completion, the professional RN will be able to:
• Describe basic principles and history of reiki, including evidence-based research that studies benefit in acute care patient settings
• Demonstrate ability to perform a basic reiki session, including hand positions and energy flow techniques
• Specify 2 scenarios where reiki can be beneficial for patient care.
• Describe basic principles of essential oil and history of use in healthcare
• Identify at least 5 essential oils commonly used for their therapeutic properties and contraindications for use.
• Demonstrate ability to properly dilute and incorporate into care plan
• Conclude findings of evidence-based research articles on use of complementary techniques in patient care.

Basic Spanish for Emergent Care (3 CE hours)
Upon completion, the professional RN will be able to:
• Describe appropriateness of basic Spanish communication verses certified Spanish interpretation.
• Describe at least 3 cultural considerations or practices relevant to Spanish-speaking patients.
• Accurately identify and use at least 50 common medical Spanish terms within phrases relevant to patient assessment, care and anatomy.
• Demonstrate ability to conduct a basic patient interview, with chief complaint and history, in an acute care setting while higher level interpreters are being obtained.
• Demonstrate ability to communicate simple medical instructions.

Nourish the Mind Body and Spirit (2 CE hours)
Upon completion, the professional RN will be able to:
• Define principles of holistic nutrition and its role in patient care
• Identify at least 5 key nutrients and their health benefits
• Describe at least 3 disease processes that benefit from focus on healthy nutritional habits
• Assess a patient’s nutritional needs based on subjective and objective data including laboratory analysis and physical presentation
• Ability to collaborate with dieticians and nutritionists to develop a comprehensive patient care plan.
• Evaluate patient participation in developing a long-term nutritional plan for improved patient outcomes and quality of life.
